Ecstasy

Ecstasy is considered a “club drug” because it is so often used at raves and all-night dance clubs. Rather than coming from a plant like marijuana, ecstasy is made from chemicals in laboratories hidden throughout the country. Makers often add various chemicals to ecstasy—such as caffeine and cocaine—causing the purity of the drug to be in question. Typically the pill is stamped with a comic image such as Tweety Bird or Mickey Mouse.

Like most other drugs, ecstasy appears to be highly addictive. Only fifteen minutes after taking the pill, ecstasy typically gives an initial “high,” often causing the person to dance wildly for hours. The “hit” typically lasts between three and six hours. But like all other drugs, ecstasy has a substantial down side. After the initial high, the user experiences depression, loneliness, sadness, and anxiety. And besides this low point, ecstasy has many other dangers. Consider a few of the harmful effects:5

Ecstasy can cause muscle tension, clenching of teeth, nausea, blurred vision, fainting, and chills or sweating.

Ecstasy increases blood pressure and heart rate.

Ecstasy can cause confusion, depression, sleep problems, intense fear, and anxiety.

In high doses, ecstasy can lead to heart problems, seizures, liver and kidney failure, as well as muscular breakdown.

Ecstasy has been linked to many deaths among teenagers.
